Carol asks…
Do toddler and kid’s shoes use the same sizing scale?
I need someone to answer this who has kids! Someone gave my son a pair of size 5 rain boots, but they seem bigger than his size 5 shoes. He is 18 months. Are there different scales for toddlers vs kids shoes? Thanks!

Ladybugs answers:
Yes there are different scales for toddlers and kids shoes. Toddler shoes are 1-13 and then there are kids sizes in the same labeled sizes but much bigger.

Paul asks…
Shoes for kids, what do you buy? Skechers/Nike/Target/Payless?
I have so far always bought shoes (sneakers) for my kids from Payless Shos or Target/Walmart, for $12-$20. My kids(under 10 yrs) have no particular character or kind they ask for yet. They wear sneakers to school all days(Northern California, not much rain, no snow). A pair last about 6 months. They only have 1 pair at a time.
This year, I’m thinking of spending a bit more and going for Nike or Skechers I saw for sale for around $35-$40. And buying 2 pairs, maybe one of the kind good for rainy days.
Wondering:
How much do you spend on shoes for school?
What brand and kind do you tend to buy?
What kind of shoes are good for days with light rainfall?

Ladybugs answers:
I spend between $10-40. I go to Walmart/Target/Payless first and let my kids decide if there is anything there they like. If not, we go another shoe store. I don’t favor one brand over another. Regardless of the name on the shoe, my kids can’t get a pair to last more than 3-4 months.

Jenny asks…
My partners Malamute steals my kids shoes !!!?
My partner has an alaskan malamute whos a year old and it drives me nuts it keeps stealing my 3 childrens shoes and chews them in the garden its costing me a fortune and sometimes ive been unable to send my kids to shool as they dont have shoes,im also on benefits and cannot keep buying new shoes it even got hold of my sons exprensive rugby togs and he broke his little heart as hes only 10.The dog also keeps raiding my kitchen bin and theres always tins and boxes in the garden and im afraid one day il be reported to environmental health and be thrown out by the council.I cant even hang washing out anymore cos the garden has turned into a mud pit full of huge holes and doggy poop which causes the dog to come in covered in mud when it rains and it jumps on my leather settee and dirtys all the floors,I do tell my partner to take responsabilite but she just says to stop nagging her and blames my kids for leaving shoes around instead of teaching the dog disapline (we all now if were parents kids will always be kids).Dont get me wrong I love this dog shes really sloppy.
thank you so much for all your answers and they all make complete sense to me,I have urged my partner to take the dog to a dog training class and to walk her,she even bought it a treadmill (to me I think fresh air and grass is better exercise) to top it all off my partner has health problems and sometimes i scream at her cos she makes me angry as to why she bought this kind of breed when she grumbles about her health she cant always handle her on the lead and the dog pulls and belive me its a strong dog I cannot handle it at all i played tug with a rope with it once and sprained my shoulder had to go to the doctor, yes I know this dog is bored and urge her to rehome the dog she replies “it will break my heart” i then say “it will break your heart when this dog gets arthiritus and has to be put down if you dont give her exercise in a few years time at least if shes with someone fit who knows this breed and has a large garden or even a plot of land the dog be happy”

Ladybugs answers:
Lay the law down with your partner…make her pay for broke and damaged goods and make her clean up the dog crap. What she is doing is disgusting. Malamutes are beautiful, intelligent dogs that need exercise and stimulation to be happy. Tell her to take care of the dog. If it was me I’d threaten to leave if she doesnt but only you can tell if you’re comfortable with doing that. Also lock up all your valuables, when you see the dog chewing something bad direct its attention to a chew toy it is allowed to have, then praise it for doing the right thing. The dog needs training.

Lisa asks…
Can a spider be the answer to my indoor organic garden bug problem? I refuse to use insecticides.?
I have an indoor garden where these tiny little gnats seem to spring forth like wild-flowers after a long rainy winter from the soil of my plants. I have a few yellow fly strips up, however, after about a week and a few hundred flies later, they stop having any space left for more flies!
I have tried nematodes and ladybugs, however those are very expensive require lots of work. My indoor garden, because of where I live, is going to be prone to these bugs no matter what I do.
I have a small outdoor garden where spiders have taken residence and seem to keep my bug problem at bay, and I have had MUCH experience with spiders and how beneficial they can be as predators. I always leave 2-3 in or around my house or garage that are out of reach to keep my bug problems at bay. (we all have flies, face it…)
Is there a “safe” species of spider that I can introduce into my very small indoor garden that will keep the bug problem at bay? Can a “safe” sepcies be kept under control?

Ladybugs answers:
Curious answers, I agree with some, not with others. (also a degreed horticulturist)
There is no one general pest control method. For example, the insecticidal soap works great on soft bodied insects, but not the hard shelled. Plus the soap can severely harm certain plants. Horticultural oil works by smothering insects, but once again, can harm certain plants. Neem is selective, diatomaceous earth is selective, pyrethrum isn’t all that safe (even if it is from nature….so is tobacco/nicotine and nicotine is extremely toxic and no longer available for pest control. Get the idea? Same thing with predatory/beneficial insects; they are selective and with pray mantids, they eat all the other bugs including fellow family members.
The answer……….use a multiple approach, what we call integrated pest management. First know what your pest problems are, learn how to treat each (hopefully there will be something that will work on many, be prepared to have multiple pest control options running at the same time. For example, the yellow sticky traps, make your own out of bright yellow plastic, coat with a sticky substance and when filled with pest, scrape them off and put the boards back out. Release parasitic wasps, use beneficial nematodes if you have large container plantings, use insectidial soap where appropriate, oil elsewhere, Neem, etc. By alternating treatments you keep the pests from developing a resistance. Also…….have a look at your growing environment. Is it such that you have breeding areas for these pests and through good cleanliness and techniquest you can eliminate many of these pests before they reach your plants?

Buying Ladybugs in the Bay Area?
I live in San Jose, California and I need a store or a garden where I can buy ladybugs to combat my aphid problem. I don’t want to order them by catalog or via the internet, so can someone give me the nearest location that sells these delightful pest control creatures? Include phone number and address of the provider, please.

Ladybugs answers:
Sloat Gardens used to sell them, so I’d give them a call. They have a few Bay Area locations, so ask if another branch sells them, if you don’t find it locally. This web page lists the towns in the Bay area where they’re located, with phone numbers too:
http://www.sloatgardens.com/locations_and_hours/default.htm
Also, consider getting the larvae of Lady Bugs, as these also eat aphids, before transforming into adults – longer control of the pests!
Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob

John asks…
Pest control queston?
I have tons of ladybugs in my house and they are getting out of control. I’m not sure I want to kill them, but what would you suggest I do to get rid of them? Only all natural, organic and non-toxic solutions please. We have cats, dogs, sugar gliders and visiting children who must be safe.

Ladybugs answers:
If you use the vacuum extension hose, secure an old stocking on with rubber bands or tape to act as a filter so as the beetles aren’t sucked into the machine…after a while it will cause a stink that will always be with your vacuum. This summer try to seal as many cracks and crevices on the outside of the home, maybe better screening on the gable vents…at the end of Summer treat the exterior of the structure with a pyrethroid based insecticide as a repellent.

Richard asks…
Planning a party for my soon to be sister in law. ADVICE!!!!!?
I’m making a casual yet beautiful table setting for my sister in law’s party. What colors go together? It is a casual fun event with a buffet dinner and there are going to be little red ladybug items on the table. So I need colors that will make the ladybug stand out and go with it. Does lavender or a pale pink go with it? What about a dark purple? Help!

Ladybugs answers:
Scrap the lavender and pale pink and go with the purple. Those bugs will POP on the table. Put red, purple, and white or cream flowers in your centerpiece.
Check out http://www.ladybuggiftstore.com for some cute accessories.
Have fun!

Helen asks…
Ideas for a garden themed second bday party?
My daughter will be 2 in August. We’re having a party for her with about 10 of her little friends (and their parents!) She loves being outside, and all the little creatures out there, so we’re doing a garden theme… ladybugs, ants, bees, butterflies. Any good ideas for decorations, snacks, activities? Thanks in advance!

Ladybugs answers:
For an activity, you could have the kids plant bean seeds in a cup of water. Then they could have that to take home as party of favor and they can grow their own little plants. If it’s outside, you probably don’t need to many decorations. You could just tie some balloons to a tree, and you could maybe put some picnic blankets on the ground. You could let them have a picnic on the ground when it’s time to eat. Eating on the ground is always fun! For snacks you can serve garden-type snacks, like cut up veggies and fruit with different dips. Even if some of the kids don’t like veggies, they’ll eat the fruit. You could also read a garden-themed story, like The Very Hungry Caterpillar, if you want another activity. Have fun! I think it’s a great party theme!

Daniel asks…
ideas for food for my 1 year olds birthday party?
her party is on the 15th so i still have some time to think about what i want to do. i need something that is inexpensive and kid friendly because i also have a three year old and there will be 2 or three other little ones there. the theme is ladybugs.
any ideas?

Ladybugs answers:
You could do cupcakes that have red icing with little black spots. Look in the cake decorating section for different types of sprinkles & premade icing, different food colouring to give you inspiration.
Of course you could do a round cake as the ladybug with licorise legs & decorations-
Fairy bread- You could use a egg ring to cut the bread into circles & use black or red sprinkle.
A fruit platter so there is something healthy.
General party food like little frankfurts, partypies, sausage rolls etc can all be put on plates that match your theme, say black & red…. Or with a table decoration in the centre of platters (get a little gift bag, put foam in it & a coloured rod then attach semi blown red & black baloons to the top with celophane & curling ribbon) they look great then you could do normal food & just match the table decorations….
You could make merangues with red food coluring & as you put them to cook add smarty eyes & freekle spots as lady bugs, they end up embedded in the top of the merangue. Look cute
& marsh mellows would also match
Hope this gives you some ideas
Ohhhh & you can also match looly bag for the older kids to take home with a beetle toy, maybe a cupcake, a red baloon & a black curly straw or something

George asks…
I need bedding to match with these colors…?
I’m redoing my room, and I’m trying to find bedding that will match with the colors of my room:
3 of the walls are a blue teal color like this – http://www.booksurge.com/images/cb_105_sm_blue_teal.jpg
and 1 wall is a pale yellow like this – http://www.scrapbookingjazz.com.au/Ladybug%20Pale%20Yellow%20Texture%20LR.jpg
I’m open to pretty much any style. I really like unique shapes and geometric patterns though. If you could find anything that would match I’d appreciate it

Ladybugs answers:
You didn’t mention your age group or bed size so I’ll assume your a teen with a twin..
These will go well

Donald asks…
what are ladybugs used in the garden for?
I see usually this time of year, the nursery are selling bags of lady bugs. What for? I have alot of flower beds, and vegetable garden. Do I need ladybugs? I’m assuming they are for some type of pest control, we notice this year MANY grasshoppers-what is up with that?? In Idaho.

Ladybugs answers:
Many people forget that ladybugs fly so they tend not to stick around if conditions are not ideal. They are voracious eaters and are very patient aphid killers, neat to watch! If you have grasshoppers, try and get some praying matis caccoons, keep them out of direct weather and they will hatch mid spring. They tend to stick around and are one of the smartest and most efficient predators I’ve ever seen.
The easiest and cheapest way to kill aphids without killing everything else in your garden is to mix up a mild solution of water and dish soap, put it in a spray bottle and spray down the affected plants.
