Your Questions About Ladybugs

Paul asks…
Ladybugs are inside my office, how can I get rid of them and stop them from coming back?
Each fall – winter season, ladybugs congregate by the hundreds in my office, they seem to stay in the corners of the windows, upper corners where the walls meet. They fly around or drop from the ceiling. I was told that they are attracted to white. my office is all white and made of center blocks.

Ladybugs answers:
Dawn dish soap and water – you mix in a spray bottle and spray
the areas they hang out in, the soap&water mix will kill the bugs
and they will not come back, it also works out doors around
doors&windows.

James asks…
What do I do if random ladybugs have decided to call my room a permanent habitat? Especially my ceiling?
They have lived on my ceiling for a while now. First I saw maybe one or two. I thought they were cute. Then came 3. Then came 15. Then came 30. Then came a half of ceiling full of ladybugs. I didn’t sleep in my room for 3 months because I had been trying to get rid of them. Now that I sprayed them all, I think, some of them are starting to come back. What do I do?

Ladybugs answers:
They’re Asian ladybugs which were introduced into the US in the 1990s. In Asia (primarily China) it is their habit to fly to the pot of white hills and find holes to winter over. Well in the US we don’t have any white hills east of the Mississippi so they fly to light colored houses and look for holes to crawl into to winter over. The best way to defeat them (after this winter) is to get two tubes of caulk and a caulk gun and in the summer sometime go around you house, especially on the south and west side and caulk every crack and hole that you can find. I did it and I get maybe one or two each winter for the last 4 winters. I was just at my brother’s today and he had them flying around–he obviously didn’t take my advice. The other benefit is it will cut down on other crawling insects and spiders getting into you house also. As for this winter, leading universities have actually studied the problem and said the best solution is to sweep them into a vacuum with a disposable bag because when you sweep them it beats them up and they smell pretty bad–so you throw away the bag when you’re done. You don’t want to over use poisons in your home.

Ken asks…
How do I get rid of ladybugs in my home?
I woke up this morning and there are literally thousands of ladybugs in my home. And I opened the door and they are all over the place outside. Is there anything I can do to get rid of them?
I also would like to know about how long this “ladybug season” lasts

Ladybugs answers:
I bought a spray at Lowe’s & it worked to get rid of them. I also vacuum the lady bugs up if they are in the house, that usually kills them. Unfortunately if you live near the woods it’s that time of year for ladybugs.
